Top 3 Commuter Bike Reviews

1. Takara Kabuto Single Speed Road Bike

A fantastic all-around commuter bike consisting of a hand-forged steel frame built specifically for the rough roads of city riding. Choose between riding in standard freewheel single speed mode or trigger the flip flop hub to ride in fixed gear.

Even though you’re essentially working with only one gear, don’t think that you won’t be able to ascend steep hills. You’ll be surprised how much torque you can get out of this crank. After years of riding, you’ll also be satisfied to know you’ve saved yourself on maintenance cost as derailleurs and gear cassettes can be very pricey. Choosing this bike as a road-only is another valid option. You’ll encounter a better workout in the long run.

Grooves, cracks, and bumps are no match for the 700 x 32 tires fitted on the 32 hole alloy wheels. The extra spokes give strength when it’s needed most: in adverse conditions at high speeds. However, you may want to upgrade to Avenir Schrader tubes and a rim tape as the spoke holes have a tendency to poke into the stock tubes. With this upgraded combo, you’ll wear out the tires before the tubes go. As with most commuter bike tubes, you’ll still need to increase the PSI every couple of weeks. The Avenirs operate best on this bike between 90 and 100 pounds per square inch.

  • Rims: Alloy singlewall 32 hole with stainless steel spoke
  • Hub Rear: Joytech alloy 16-tooth freewheel and fix gear, bolt on
  • Hub Front: Joytech allow high flange, bolt on
  • Tires: Kenda Yellow 700 x 32

When it comes time to stop—or avoid an obstacle—utilize the alloy pull brakes connected to the front and rear tries. Stopping has never been an issue. The only item needing replacement is the brake pad, which wore normally over time. You may find yourself manually adjusting the center of the pads after replacement, as they are not dual pivot. This bike comfortably fits riders from 5ft 8in all the way to 6ft tall. It has a standover clearance of 31 inches. If you’re 5ft 7 and lower, you may want to look into a smaller frame.

All in all, this is a great commuter bike for the price. You may purchase it as a “starter bike”, but soon find yourself hanging onto is as the quality is quite good. If the bike requires assembly, be sure to tighten all the nuts as there may be a clicking in the right or left crank at the top of the rotation.

2. GMC Denali Road Bike

The second-most popular bike on our list is the GMC Denali Road Bike. This particular commuter bike has the most reviews and a solid rating of 3.5/5. The frame consists of lightweight aluminum, which is great for both city driving and road riding.

The brakes are alloy calipers but may require a bit of adjustment. If you’re not seated properly and they are too tight, the brakes may stop the bike but not your torso. The wheels are high-profile alloy Vitesse rims intentionally built for racing. They’ll do just fine on the asphalt and gravel of the city.

Out of the fixie realm, this bike sports a Shimano derailleur and Revo shifts. They are incredibly smooth and quiet. When switching out from a low gear at a red light, you’ll find yourself at the top of the gear set by the end of the intersection. The pickup is great and works very well for hilly environments.

Included are 700c tires, which don’t blink an eye at downtown potholes. They’re strong and can take some serious rider abuse. As with most bikes, it may be beneficial to add rim tape.

  • Rims: Vitesse Alloy black 700CX14GX36H
  • Tires: Kenda Black w/ Gray Band 7X28C
  • Front Derailleur: Shimano FD-TZ 31 Index
  • Rear Derailleur: Shimano RD-TZ30GS 7SPD
  • 21 Speeds in all

The seat is adjustable, so you may find yourself modifying the pitch a bit. This is primarily an issue for riders who normally angle their seat forward. With a few easy modifications out of the box, you’ll find this bike is a wonderful value for the price. While it’s not a professional level commuter bike, this will not compromise your savings and most importantly your safety.

3. Schwinn Discover Men’s Hybrid Bike

This powerful bike is outfitted with an aluminum frame, perfect for city riding. This all sits on an SR Suntour suspension fork for easy riding in the city or on a trail.

On the handlebar you’ll find easy-to-use grip shifters connected to a Shimano gear set for 21 wonderful speeds. The grip shift allows for easy control without removing your hands or fingers from the safety of the handlebar. There are a few notable experiences where the chain would skip under high stress. This mostly occurred at the initial ascent of a hill. You may want to get the derailleur inspected by a bike mechanic.

This bike sports Promax alloy linear pull brakes, but be sure to have them looked at if you’re planning to take this bike off-road. While it will handle the abuse of dips and bumps, the added stress of mountain riding can take its toll on the pads. Visually inspect the pads and test out the stopping ability on a few curbs.

Its frame is built to fit larger riders. If you’re under 5ft 9in, you may want to move along to a smaller frame. One great benefit of this particular bike is the rear wheel rack and fenders. This is particularly beneficial if you’re hauling boxes or find yourself in wet terrain. This commuter bike may not have the pizzazz of a sleeker road-style bike, but its functionality makes up for it.

  • Men’s comfort bike with aluminum city frame
  • SR Suntour suspension fork; SR Suntour alloy crank
  • 21-speed SRAM grip shifters; Shimano rear derailleur
  • Promax alloy linear pull brakes; rear gear carrier
  • Swept-back upright handlebar and padded saddle

We’ve had a Schwinn World Sport touring bike—which is still going strong—and are familiar with their level of quality. This bike does not compromise that reputation. If you find yourself hauling a small amount of gear on the daily and are looking to save a few pennies while you’re at it, then we recommend this contender for your commuter bike.
